vs. HSBC RFC XV 14th September 2019

Our first match of the season kicked off against HSBC RFC XV as part of their sports and social club 100 years anniversary celebrations. The match took place at their beautiful grounds in Beckenham with a free bar and against a side who are just about to start their season in Kent league 1.  Former England Rugby World Cup winning captain Martin Johnson opened proceedings with tales of a bygone amateur era as a former employee of the then Midland Bank (now HSBC) and his early days when he was breaking into an England side and also the Lions.

HSBC got off to a good start taking an early lead as a result of some good play and some interesting defending, however, our islanders complete with a few new and some older players, were starting to put the phases together, took the ball up the other end with our number 8 for the day and Fiji Store, man of the match and former Manu Samoa 7s representative Alafoti Fa' osiliva picked the ball up at the base of the scrum and crossed the line to score, that with the resulting conversion by Howard Graham levelling the scores.

A penalty from HSBC saw them take a 10-7 lead on the 20 minute mark. The Pacific Islanders were playing some great rugby demonstrating some of the principles of rugby we have come to expect with some great continuity throughout which saw us take the 2nd quarter of the match after 2 tries and going in at half time 21-10 to the good.

Half time came at a good time, a breather, time to reflect on the combinations, 2nd half started the way the 1st half ended. Dominance from our man of the match and a few running repairs that kept our first aid busy we eventually ran out 17-52 victors with possibly the moment of the match was when debutant, Meli Matata took the ball up the right hand touchline and offloaded in the tackle inside him to dad Poli  who crossed for the score which demonstrated why this club is like no other #family #ourcommunity #ourpacific

A big thank you to all our supporters who turned up to support all the players at HSBC sport and social club and of course our hosts HSBC, congratulations for 100 years and hope to see you again soon.

As ever massive appreciation and thanks go out to our sponsors and partners Jon Kama of Fiji Store for sponsoring the man of the match award which was won by Alafoti Fa'osiliva in a game that saw him score four tries and dominate throughout, Daniel Featherstone of Made For Drink , Sunrise Coffee a new business by coach Solo Baleisolomone and finally Callum Drummond of Bula Batiki
